The Next Generation of Energy Storage Devices

Modern batteries are limited in their ability to sustain an efficient electrochemical conversion process.  As the battery ages the conversion process degrades, the battery performance declines and eventually the battery will fail.  AGT has developed a patented technology that uses ultrasonic energy to increase battery performance by altering the electrochemical conversion process, resulting in improved battery efficiency, increased capacity, and extended service life

AGT offers customized product solutions to improve the efficiency of battery-based energy storage systems.  Efficiency gains are achieved through the injection of low levels of ultrasonic energy, which modifies the electrochemical performance within the battery and reduces its internal impedance.  This effect provides increased capacity, reduced charging times, reduced size, weight, and material needs.  The ultrasonic energy is transferred to the battery through a low power actuator ( shown in Figure 1) which can be retrofitted onto existing batteries or incorporated directly into the structure of new batteries.

Product-based customized solutions are determined through analysis of customers’ existing or planned energy systems, development of the optimal mechanism and location to apply the ultrasonic energy to their particular batteries, and testing to validate the performance improvements.  Additional value can be added to a product-based offering through the incorporation of controls to optimize battery impedance for a given application.  Once validated, a customized product-based solution will be licensed to customers for incorporation into their energy systems.

AGT’s ultrasonic technology also improves certain electrochemical conversion processes that are affected by ultrasonic energy.  Widespread industry examples that are being pursued include battery electrode formation and electrochemical plating.

When a client licenses AGT’s technology they get clarity in their energy systems performance, i.e. The”Boost” in the UPBA aconym discussed earlier.

AGT’s  UPBATM solutions add value since we can enhance the performance and extend the life of existing batteries.  Most importantly, is that the industry as a whole has been seeking an “advanced” battery technology for decades, and lead-acid has still prevailed!  New and so-called “disruptive” technologies and chemistries fail to win market share because their developers and supporters fail to account for incremental improvements and enhancements to the prevailing technology they are trying to displace or replace.  This is especially true with utilities, because reliability, availability, and familiarity with the product (i.e. staff training, O&M characteristics, existing expertise, etc…)—in other words, predictability—is critical.  AGT’s UPBATM technology is nothing more than an add-on to an already proven technology that everybody understands – AGT just makes it better.

Electrically powered and battery fueled vehicles | Terraintegra

December 16, 2011

Water is life. The Eridanus Project is established to manufacture a vehicle, electrically powered and battery fuelled, to transport precious water from wells and rivers to where desperately needed in villages and communities.

Every day a person requires a minimum of about 10 litres of water to drink, wash and cook with. Every day about 850 million Europeans use an average of 200 litres of water while every day in Africa and Asia 885 million people do not even have access to 10 litres of clean water. Every day 4,000 children die from lack of water or the consumption of contaminated water. Every day women and children spend a combined 200 million hours transporting water.

“African women may walk over six kilometres per day in search of water, spending as much as eight hours collecting water.2 In most countries, girls often are given the task of collecting water, carrying 15 to 20 litres of water from the water point home. Access to water and sanitation is therefore related to the time that girls need to attend school, and can be the reason why they are kept out of school. In many developing countries, furthermore, girls are often not permitted to attend schools that do not have latrines out of concern for their privacy and modesty. 3 Therefore, access to fresh water and sanitation does not only improve the health of a family, but it also provides an opportunity for girls to go to school, and for women to use their time more productively than in fetching water.” UN Commission on Social Development.

The UNDP states that an absence of clean water diminishes the GDP of Sub Saharan Africa by 5%.

Terraintegra together with its partners in South Africa (Pearl Pillay and Yeagam Reddy) and in Mexico (Luis Cordoba) is developing the Eridanus transporter (ET). The ET is an electrically powered vehicle with carrying capacity of 300kg. ET can carry 300 litres of water or 300kg of food, tools and medicines for over 100kms. ET can also carry two passengers in addition to a driver, to assist with loading and unloading of cargo or simply to take a passenger to a hospital or school e.t.c. Without water or other goods payload, the ET can carry 6 passengers.

The Eridanus Project focuses on producing the ET at low cost while ensuring that it has the robustness and capability of doing its specified work with minimal fatigue. Safety of occupants is also a priority. The ET will be equipped with sturdy frame, strong side sills, engineered crumple zone and strong rollover bar. The vehicle will be fuelled by a battery (fitted along the centre line of the vehicle) which can be recharged by Solar, wind, hydro and biogas generated electricity.

The ET will be made available throughout Africa and Asia with training to drivers and charging station managers.

The ET will be fuelled by a series of alternative energy stations in the villages and communities where it operates. These charging stations will also supply electricity to community schools, clinics, homes and work places.

With access to clean water, food and other goods, a community can refocus on its own enterprise, education, health and nourishment.
